Eating Healthy on a Budget – Part 2

Last week, I talked about how increasing the fruits and vegetables in your diet can increase the nutrients in your diet while also decreasing your grocery budget. This week, I talked about how getting your portions right can allow you to increase the quality of your food without increasing your budget.

It sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it? But when you do the math it works out. Most people are eating 10-12 ounces of meat per meal. Sometimes even a full pound (16 ounces)! The correct portion is 3-4 ounces. If you buy a 10 ounces of steak for everyone at your table, your spending 3 times as much per person as you actually need to.

Grass-fed beef is typically 1.5-2 times more expensive that the factory-farmed beef in the grocery store. If you buy quality grass-fed beef and serve the correct portion, you will actually be paying less for your meat than you were.

In addition, if you vary your protein sources by adding nuts and beans to your diet, you can reduce your grocery costs in further. You’re also introducing more vitamin variety and increasing your fiber.
