The Cliff

|

She stood upon a precipice. Another wall of jagged rock stretch up before her. Another wall of grief, hurt, and anger to scale and heal before she could reach her dreams.

Below her were miles of jagged rock and cliffs that she had already climbed to reach where she was. Always pushing past the people pulling her down and holding her back.

But now she was tired. Not just weary but exhausted. Soul tired.

She wondered if the climbing was worth the effort. She wondered is she would ever reach her dreams.

When he walked up to stand beside her, she thought she finally had an ally. She thought she wasn’t alone. She thought the journey up would get easier.

As he offered her a hand, she ignored the feeling of unease beneath her skin. She let the exhaustion take over and pushed out the nagging voice warning her that he wasn’t what he seemed.

In the seconds before he pushed her off the cliff, she felt relief.

When she hit the bottom, she couldn’t even cry. There were no tears left. No anger left. Just a black abyss of hopeless. Love offered and denied.

So she choose sleep, collapse, a rest born of grief so deep it feels like a bottomless cavern.

But what rose from the ashes was woman who knew who she was, knew her worth, and would never deny herself again.
